The Knowledgebase

Our knowledgebase holds those stars visible to the unaided eye (e.g. down to visual magnitude +6.0) with their visual attributes (location Ra/De, visual magnitude, color) and their identification within various star catalogues (HIPPARCOS, Bayer, Flamsteed, Ptolemy, Henry Draper, Durchmusterungen, Fundamental Katalogs 5 and 6, …). In addition to these star, the database holds respecitve data for other celestial objects and events like sun, moon and planets, deepsky objects, eclipses, comets, meteorshowers (again restricted to those visible to the unaided eye). With this physical data, we are able to create the "links" between the sky and it's interpretation by various human cultures.

For a given human culture, the knowledgebase holds constellations with their attributes (name, description, myths and constellation lines between stars) and also names, descriptions and myths of stars, celestial objects and celestial events (eclipses, comets, …). Every single element of knowledge within the knowledgebase has a named primary source and can be enriched with a list of relevant links to other resources on the internet.

Please keep in mind that Ancient-Skies only collects data for stars (and other celestial objects and events) that are/were visible to the unaided eye.

The database design

 

The knowledgebase is available to registered members only. Of course the registration is free of costs and obligations (except the obligation to follow our published rules and accepted behaviours).
